China, Nepal reach historic biodiversity agreement

China and Nepal sign a Memorandum of Understanding on environment and biodiversity conservation, made between the State Forestry Administration of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation of the Government of Nepal. The WWF notes that this is a historic moment for both countries as their governments have joined hands for the first time to promote cooperation in the field of biodiversity conservation, management of forest resources and protection of wildlife

The US EPA has finalized a rule setting tough engine fuel standards for large US flagged ships, a major milestone in the agency’s coordinated strategy to slash harmful marine diesel emissions. The regulation harmonizes with international standards and will lead to significant air quality improvements throughout the country.

High Speed Rail in France: Le TGV — C’est Cool.

Since 1981, France has had a true high speed rail service, the TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse). We here in the US are only about 30 years behind the French in this regard…and counting. As US politicians continue to dither on high speed passenger rail, throwing loose change at development, the French corporations like Alstom have perfected this product for export to its former colonies in the developing world making big profits.

Fewer U.S. citizens consider climate change to be a “serious threat” compared to two years ago, even as scientific evidence demonstrates that the problem has become increasingly severe, according to a recent nationwide public opinion poll.

Pakistan Village Finds Shelter in New Eco-Friendly Homes

Twenty-five of the poorest households in Village Haji Jaffar Jamari, Pakistan were chosen as beneficiaries for the People’s Housing Program, dubbed ‘Benazir Model’, named after the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. It was launched on May 1, 2009 to provide energy-efficient, low-cost and disaster-proof housing for the poor in Sindh province. The housing program, which will see the construction of 500 units for the poor, is being jointly undertaken by the provincial government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
