Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite

Although practically non-existent in the United States for nearly 40 years — from the 1950s to late 1990s — the bed bug population has recently resurfaced with a vengeance. In fact, bed bug infestations have caused such a nationwide stir that the U.S. government has stepped in to help.

Last year, in response to the growing number of bed bug infestations across the nation, Congressman G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina introduced the federal legislation Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009. If approved, the bill will provide resources to state and local officials to help fight bed bug outbreaks in various settings across the U.S. Among the many programs, the bill will require public housing agencies to include in their annual plans the measures necessary to control bed bugs.

As people continue to look for effective ways to kill bed bugs in Manassas, VA and elsewhere in the nation, the new bill could provide some answers. If approved, the legislation will direct the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the public health implications of bed bugs.
